Abstract
The Regulations for Earthquake-Resistant Design of Buildings in Egypt were published by the Egyptian Society for Earthquake Engineering in 1988. A basic consideration in earthquake-resistant design is to predict the intensity of the future seismic events for the site of a proposed structure. The Republic of Egypt is divided into four zones according to the level of seismic activity, as shown in Fig. 14.1. Regions of high seismic activity in Zone 3 include counties that are adjacent to the Red Sea shore and southern Sinai Peninsula, and Aswan County. These regions are assigned a value of VIII on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale (this intensity corresponds to moderate damage to buildings and other structures). Zone 2 is assigned an MMI value of VII, Zone 1 an MMI value of VI, and Zone 0 an MMI value ≤V.
