Abstract

Chile, located along the southwestern coast of South America between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, has a long history of seismic activity. The country has been struck by a number of severe earthquakes. The most notable quake, in 1960, measured 8.5 on the Richter scale and caused more than 5,000 deaths. Another quake in 1939 destroyed the city of Chillán and caused approximately 30,000 deaths. In addition, at the beginning of this century (1906) the city of Valparaíso also suffered a serious earthquake. Based on the extent of the damage, the intensity of that earthquake in the area close to the epicenter has been estimated as IX on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale.
