Abstract

The term pelagic is derived from a Greek word meaning the sea or open ocean. When applied to fish, it generally means those species adapted to living not far from the ocean surface. The pelagic fish of commercial interest may be found from top surface waters to depths as great as 656.2 ft (200 m) or more.
