Digital Pre-emphasis and De-emphasis Standard

Abstract

In the early development of digital standards for both professional and consumer applications, 14-bit systems were considered. In order to make the 14-bit standard workable for low-level music, a pre-emphasis and complementary de-emphasis scheme was implemented with time constants of 50 and 15 microseconds. These values correspond to transition frequencies of 3180 Hz and 10,600 Hz, as shown in Figure 99. A recording that has been made with pre-emphasis carries a flag that will tell the playback system to switch in the complementary high-frequency rolloff.
