On-Axis Proximity Effect in a Cardioid Microphone at Several Distances

Abstract

For a given working distance and frequency, the on-axis proximity effect in a cardioid microphone will be one-half that of a dipole microphone. The reason is simply that the response of the cardioid microphone is composed of equal amounts of dipole and omnidirectional components, and only the dipole component contributes to the proximity effect.
