Reflex Performance of the Chronically Isolated Human Spinal Cord
Almost all knowledge about the functioning of the spinal cord comes from experimentation in cats and rats and most commonly from acute experimental procedures. It is clear that in several respects the acute rat and cat cord provides a poor experimental model for the normal functioning of the human cord. In addition, animal models fail to reproduce many clinical features of disordered function of the human cord. Most obviously, there is no good animal model for spasticity.
The material presented here has been gathered over the last 10 years of attempts to restore aspects of normal motor behaviour like standing or walking in adult humans who have suffered partial or complete spinal cord lesions. The reflex behaviour of the human cord has afforded many surprises. These have often been inconvenient from the point of view of rehabilitation of the injured person but have yield insights in to the functional organisation of the lower spinal cord segments in man.
