Abstract

Relations between the generations—between the old and their grown-up children—are determined by several factors:

  • biologically through the genetic likenesses between individuals in the same family but different generations.

  • emotionally through the feelings of affection—or hatred — which arise during the human child’s long dependence on his or her parents.

  • socially through the cultural codes which every society develops for its collective survival.
