Health Related Quality of Life as an Outcome Measure for Health Care of Elderly People

The Emperor’s New Clothes

  • Chapter
Preparation for Aging

Abstract

That quality of life should be used as an outcome measure of the health care of elderly people is at first sight an attractive and plausible notion. It is also an idea that has received increasing support over recent years. However, like so many ideas that are attractive at first sight, it is probably a notion upon which we should reflect rather than taking it up uncritically. This paper will look at the way that “quality of life” has been used, in order to open up debate as to its utility.
