Stimulation of Intestinal Immune Cells By E. coli in Gnotobiotic Piglets

Abstract

Enterobacteriaceae, among them various E. coli strains, exhibit two contradictory effects: stimulation of local and systemic immunity on the one hand1, and threatening the life by penetration and even bacteriaemia and death if the immune system is impaired on the other hand.2 Therefore, an effort has been made to find a non-pathogenic E. coli strain which has the ability to suppress unwanted intestinal bacteria. Highly infection-prone colostrum-deprived gnotobiotic piglets were used for association experiments. Results obtained with the promising E. coli strain 06:K5:H1 (Nissle 1917) are reported.
