Nuclear Physics: An Historic Overview

Abstract

The scope of nuclear many-body problems of current interest is staggering. It covers the range in A from 1 to (say) 300 and infinity (nuclear matter); isotopic compositions N and Z near and far from the stable valley, and the equation of state of nuclear matter as a function of T and p. A speculative phase diagram (reproduced from Nagamiya and Gyulassyl) is shown in Figure. 1. Exotic states of nuclear matter are of interest in studying the physics of relativistic heavy ion collisions, neutron stars, super novae, early universe, etc. In order to limit the scope of the present discussion, I will restrict my talk to cold nuclei.
