Abstract

It is a well established fact that several postural and ocular motor disorders are secondary to distinct and separate lesions of central vestibular pathways from the vestibular nuclei to ocular motor nuclei. A generally established classification of central vestibular disorders of the brainstem does not exist. One of us (Brandt, 1991) has proposed a first hypothetical and speculative attempt to classify vestibular brainstem disorders according to a lesional tone imbalance in one of the three major planes of action of the VOR: (I) horizontal head rotation about a vertical z-axis = yaw, (II) vertical head extension or flexion about a horizontal binaural y-axis = pitch, (III) lateral head tilt about a horizontal (line of sight) x-axis = roll.
