In her latest report, on Tobacco and Young People, the US Surgeon General said “The public health movement against tobacco use will be successful when young people no longer want to smoke”. In my country there has been no decline in smoking rates among school children over the past decade. In some countries smoking rates among young people are rising, and in developing countries where up to half the population may be under 15, there are huge potential markets for the tobacco industry. We all know what this will mean for public health in twenty or thirty years time. And we all know that children are as important to the tobacco industry as they are to us, though for different reasons.
