Abstract
Madame Minister, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:
I am very pleased to have this opportunity to say a few words at the opening of the Ninth World Conference on Tobacco and Health. This is indeed an important occasion for all of us involved in public health issues because it allows us to draw the attention of policy makers and the public yet again to one of the major health scourges of modern times, that of tobacco consumption. And the sad fact is that tobacco consumption kills up to half a million people in the Community each year.
