Abstract

All cells possess the capacity to process information from their surroundings. Target cells in specialized sensory organs can be stimulated by external signals such as light, odorants and chemical messengers between neighboring or distant cells. The interaction of these factors with specific receptors at the cell surface constitutes the first step in a cascade of biochemical events that underlies transmembrane signaling.
