More Complex Passion

  • James P. Gustafson

Abstract

The ability to move widely and deeply in human affairs is sought by many writers, artists, ecologists, political leaders, or even psychotherapists. This freedom of movement is what I mean by a complex passion. Passion is from the Latin passio, to suffer. Oddly, the ability to suffer a wide variety of positions gives freedom of movement if one is not stuck in any given suffering. It is not easy to find a map for the trials of passion. Some patients come to us needing a mentor for this kind of life. I offer here what I think is needed.
