How are we to be useful in the patient’s current episode of distress, briefly, with the twelve or six or two sessions allotted, and yet borrow from the fertility of the unconscious? To meet the challenge of any case in an hour, we have to see first what the patient is looking for, consciously. Yet, he always overlooks what will stop him from finding it. Thus, he is always unconscious of what is most important.
