Abstract

Elastomers can be reinforced, or made tougher, by the addition of very small particles, typically finely dispersed carbon blacks or silicas. Similar types of reinforcement in elastomers can be brought about by the addition of a plastic polymeric phase (Sections 4.4 and 8.4) or the inclusion of polystyrene latexes.
