Poor design is a life sentence to the operator on the floor! This enforces the need for evaluating what impacts the design specifications have on both manufacturing and assembly and how these impacts come about. Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) is an analytical process that considers all aspects of the design, development, total parts, manufacturability, cost, assembly time, and modularity. DFMA has been in use by industry for several years. It focuses on product enhancements to allow improvements in manufacturing, cost, quality, reliability, time to market, and many other areas.
