In most practical situations, perfect channel state information (CSI) is not available at the receiver. Consequently, an iterative receiver should be able to deal with unknown, and possibly time varying parameters. Applications that can potentially benefit from these adaptive receivers include Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) in interleaved frequency-selective fading channels, and Parallel and Serial Concatenated Convolutional Codes (PCCCs and SCCCs) with carrier phase tracking (or in the presence of flat fading).
