Abstract
The northern and far northern provinces in Cameroon are part of the Sudan-Zambesian Region in Africa. They are characterised by a semi arid climate, with rainfall limited to 1200 mm per year and temperatures up to 40°-45° C. The hydrology distribution is characterised by river flow in two main drainage basins associated with the river Niger and lake Chad. The Logone river is the major one. The mayos of the Maroua region are seasonal streams running down from Mandara, which during dry season disappear into their sandy alluvial beds. Soils in the middle Benoue and the Logone plain are mainly hydromorphic (F. Loung).
