Abstract

It has been discussed in Chapter 5 that the excess charge on an impurity ΔZ gives rise to an excess bare-ion impurity potential ΔV b(r). The potential ΔV b(r) is screened by the conduction electrons of the host metal thus causing redistribution of the conduction electrons. The change in conduction electron density Δn(r) produces an additional change in the impurity potential giving rise to a net excess impurity potential ΔV(r), usually called impurity scattering potential. Therefore, Δn(r) and ΔV(r) are interrelated and must be evaluated self-consistently.
