The Denouement: the Universal Gravity Law

  • Amit Goswami

Abstract

Galileo discovered the correct law of falling bodies but had no idea what causes the acceleration of the falling bodies. Kepler, who discovered the correct laws of planetary motion, did have the notion that there must be a force between the sun and the planets, but could not make much progress with his idea. It was up to Newton to discover that it was the force of gravity that propelled the planets around the sun, and that it was also the force of gravity that propelled falling bodies toward the earth. What was the nature of the gravity force that it was capable of both feats?
