Circadian Rhythms in Unicellular Organisms

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbook of Behavioral Neurobiology ((HBNE,volume 12))

Abstract

This volume of the Handbook of Behavioral Neurobiology emphasizes circadian behaviors and mechanisms in higher organisms. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss what studies on simple unicellular systems have told us about clocks that are particularly relevant to clock studies in higher organisms. This chapter does not pretend to review the literature exhaustively; rather, we discuss a few salient points. Other chapters in this volume specifically address clock studies about Gonyaulax and Neurospora in more detail.
