Abstract
Rabies is a zoonotic disease. Human deaths are the accidental consequence of biologic processes of virus maintenance and perpetuation to which they do not directly contribute. However, humans have indirectly played a tremendous role in the current geographical distribution of rabies virus (RABV) and the historical importance of rabies. The prime example of this indirect human influence rests with the domestication of the dog (Canis lupus or C. familiaris). Because of the dog’s popularity as a work and companion animal it has been introduced throughout the world since its domestication some 12,000 years ago. Today, with an estimated 500 million or more dogs in the world (Matter and Daniels, 2000), we are living with the public health consequences of this relationship, as dogs remain the single most important reservoir host and source of human rabies infection throughout much of the world.
