Structure Elucidations of Dimeric Pteridines

Abstract

Catalytic reduction of pterin in alkaline solution and subsequent air oxidation produces a series of so-called dimeric pteridines. Structure elucidations of dimer A and B revealed that the expected dipterinyl derivatives are degraded more severely under ring contraction of the pyrimidine moiety to form imidazo(4,5-b)pyrazine derivatives. New structures are proposed for dimer A (19), dimer B (20) and dimer D (3) based upon mass spectral studies and analogies to lumazine dimerisations.
