Serotonergic Metabolism and Violence/Aggression

  • Chapter
The Neurobiology of Criminal Behavior

Part of the book series: Neurobiological Foundation of Aberrant Behaviors ((NFAB,volume 5))

Abstract

The association between a low incidence of serotonin metabolites in the central nervous system and aggressive-suicidal behavior (Asberg, Traskman, & Thoren, 1976) is now well established. Originally, it appeared that serotonin was related to suicidal behavior, but subsequently it was shown that low serotonin turnover is also related to impulsivity and violent behavior (Linnoila & Virkkunen, 1992).
