Abstract
I have had the good fortune to work in intensive care medicine as a respiratory care practitioner for 33 years. During that time, I have seen the introduction of new technology, mostly from manufacturers of mechanical ventilators. Each new generation of mechanical ventilators has been touted as providing perfect treatment to patients with acute or chronic respiratory failure. However, even with the latest new ventilator platform, even with flashing lights displayed on a breath-by-breath basis, patients still die.
