Service Learning at Kansas State University: Educating Citizens for the Future
John Gardner’s words describe the fundamental principles of service learning at Kansas State University. Since its beginning on October 1, 1987, the K-State Community Service Program (CSP) has been based on the belief that citizens must be full participants in the communities in which they live and work and that higher education has an important role to play in preparing students for their citizenship responsibility in our democratic system and global society. The learning laboratories are the communities of rural Kansas and the world, communities that are often on the cusp of either continued survival or decline as they struggle to meet the economic, social, and educational needs of their citizens and to maintain a healthy environment. In Kansas, their struggle is reflected in the decline in population and the erosion of quality of life and services for citizens. In the international communities where we serve, meeting the practical needs of sufficient and healthy food and water, safe housing, and education for families and children is a daily challenge. The leadership and experience of community leaders combined with the talent and enthusiasm of K-State students participating in the Community Service Program has produced visible results both for students and for communities.
