Feed Formulation and the Computer

  • Gene M. Pesti

One of the first applications of computers to agricultural problems was in least-cost feed formulation. Linear Programs were developed that could choose the combination of ingredients that would satisfy the animal’s nutrient needs at the least cost. Least-cost feed formulation programs are management tools that make fast responses to changing prices possible. Feed ingredient prices change daily. Feed formulation programs allow managers to quickly calculate the effects of potential formulation changes on the cost of the finished feed. Changes that may be evaluated include substituting one ingredient for another and feeding different nutrient levels.
