Abstract
This report is devoted to a brief survey of the major principles and ideas employed in LLDAR remote sensing. For more detailed information the book by (Measures, 1984) as well as others (Measures, 1988; Grant, 1995; Killinger andMooradian, 1983; Zuev and Naats, 1983; Hinkley, 1976; Svanberg, 1994) are recommended. In the present context, laser remote sensing is the sensing of spectroscopic parameters of various objects over distances ranging from meters to hundreds of kilometers and even further. The technique that allows such measurements to be conducted is called LIDAR. This is an abbreviation of LIght Detection And Ranging, after the well-known abbreviation 'radar'. In many aspects the basic principles of lidar and radar are the same, but radar uses a radio beam, while lidar employs light. The idea of applying laser sources for such remote detection was emphasised and employed as early as the 6O's (Ligda, 1963; Hickman and Hogg, 1969; Inaba and Kobayasi, 1969), when laser action was discovered and lasers first began to be applied.
