Abstract
Tear Breakup Time (BUT), the only clinical method of measuring tear film stability, is considered to be the primary and “first test” for the diagnosis of dry eyes. 1.2; A recommendation, by the National Eye Institute/Industry Workshop on Clinical Trials in Dry Eyes, that a test for tear stability be used as a global criterion of dry eyes substantiates the importance of the BUT measurement. 1 An unstable tear film is known to be a common denominator amongst a number of conditions causing dry eyes, ocular irritation, and contact lens intolerance. 1.3 BUT is defined as the interval following a blink to the occurrence of gaps or breaks in the tear film. Lemp et al. 4.5 described a normal tear BUT to be > 10 s. Marginal dry eyes show BUTs of 5-9 s and a BUT of <5 s is indicative of dry eye disorder.
