Abstract
These disorders are classified with respect to their importance in the primary care setting. Successful treatment of psychiatric disorders in medically ill patients improves functioning, pain tolerance, and adherence to treatment regimens. The definitions presented are based primarily on DSM-IV criteria. Substance abuse disorders are discussed in the chapter titled “Alcohol and other substances of abuse”. Exclusion criteria for all of following disorders includes symptoms due to other causes such as substance abuse, another psychiatric illness, or a general medical condition (such as anemia, thyroid disorders, Parkinsonism, diabetes, etc.).
