Abstract

Recent advances in women’s health have been encouraging (Goldman & Hatch, 2000; Alexander & LaRosa, 1994; Blechman & Brownell, 1998). Major strides have been made in a myriad of health-related areas. One domain that has experienced marked advances in early detection of disease, prevention, and treatment is women’s sexual and reproductive health. The chapters in this book describe promising advances in the field of women’s sexual and reproductive health: screening, prevention, and treatment, both primary and secondary, both biomedical and psychological. Notwithstanding these advances, complex research challenges and significant sociopolitical hurdles remain to be surmounted. This chapter, unlike its predecessors, attempts to highlight key areas of research and discern fruitful directions for building a science of women’s sexual and reproductive health.
