Abstract
According to popular view and many experts, the menopause, or “change of life,” is thought to represent a major cultural, psychological, and physiological milestone for women during the middle years. It signifies the end of reproduction and is a prominent biological marker for an aging process in cultures that extol youthfulness. Menopause has been viewed through the ages as a sign of sin and decay, psychological loss, and more recently as a deficiency disease (Kaufert & McKinlay, 1985; McCrea, 1983). It is often assumed that menopause is inevitably accompanied (to a greater or lesser extent) by hot flushes, sweats, prolonged menstrual irregularities, vaginal dryness, and a host of other “symptoms,” including depression, irritability, weight gain, insomnia, dizziness, and loss of interest in sex.
