Abstract

At the end of World War II, many returning GIs had the cost of their education to a college or university of their choice paid by the government. Enrollment at these schools experienced a sudden, massive increase. As a result, schools quickly had to add new faculty, because of the large influx of students. Therefore, qualified persons were in demand, which meant that one could just about select the school where they wanted to teach and do research. As soon as the War had finished, I was prepared to choose my school, since I had long known that I really wanted a teaching position.
