Disasters and the Selection of Public Mental Health Priorities

A Perspective from Developing Countries

  • Chapter
Book cover Toxic Turmoil

Part of the book series: The Plenum Series on Stress and Coping ((SSSO))

Abstract

Disasters, like wars, earthquakes, floods, cyclones, landslides, technological accidents, and urban fires, occur all over the world. Asia leads the rest of the world, averaging 197 disasters per year, followed by the Americas at 111 disasters, Europe at 77, Africa at 61, and Oceania at 18. Although some developed countries, such as the United States, are quite vulnerable to disasters, developing countries are disproportionately exposed (Somasundaram, Norris, Asukai, Srinivasa Murthy, & Shalev, 2002).
