Abstract

Caches have been reported in Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland (Hranicky and Herndon 1992), (Hranicky 1992, 1990, 1989 and 1987), (Curry 1992), (Wimsatt 1958), (Livesay, et al. 1970), (MacCord 1980 and 1972), (Painter 1964), (Tisdale 1964), (Stevens and Whitted 1976), (Wells 1969), (Geasey 1974), and elsewhere in the Middle Atlantic area. Native American caches represent an isolated artifact or group of artifacts placement usually near a river or major stream. They are probably the result of a young Native American knapper’s work, as most Maryland and Virginia caches are composed of poorly made pieces. But, who made them and why will probably never be known. Of course, we maintain the archaeological speculations for all caches.
