Abstract

This paper discusses changes in organisational languages during information systems development (ISD). Five Swedish organisations have conducted large ISD projects following different IS strategies, proposing different principles for ISD and, thus, resulting in different IS architectures. One of the IS strategies is a data-driven strategy which advocates a centralised solution with large, integrated databases, while the other IS strategy implies a decentralised solution where local IS communicate through message interaction. A number of problem situations are identified as hindrances for reaching an IS architecture that really supports the organisation. Problems occur in both IS strategies. Some solutions to these problems are proposed in a human and business perspective; 1) there has to be a clear focus on business needs, goals, activities, and organisational languages during ISD, 2) both spoken and computerised organisational languages must be object for a thorough analysis during ISD, and 3) decisions regarding concept definitions as well as formulation of commonly agreed computerised languages have to be made.
