Abstract
Effective watershed management practices contribute to land stewardship by sustaining the physical and economic flows of crucial natural and economic resources. These resources include tangible commodities, such as water, timber, and forage for livestock production and intangible values, such as scenic quality, experiencing solitude, and existence and bequest values. Securing clean water and maintaining the health and stability of sensitive watershed-riparian systems by recognizing the complexity of responses in these ecosystems will continue to be significant watershed management contributions to land stewardship. Enhancing opportunities for investment, employment, and income is another contribution that watershed management can make to future land stewardship. However, these contributions will be difficult to achieve unless the adverse impacts caused by people on fragile riparian sites and the surrounding watersheds are reversed. A watershed management approach to land stewardship is a framework for more effective land-use polices.
