Abstract

Three hundred years ago there were approximately 500 million people in the world. Today, the estimated human population is 6 billion—more than a tenfold increase. Even more striking is that global human population has doubled in the past 50 years. The impact on our world from this accelerating growth rate will determine how we manage the earth’s ecosystems in the 21st century.
