Abstract

Millions of employees have been displaced over the last decade, and many of these have been corporate professionals and managers. Unfortunately, government agencies have not deemed it necessary to create career transition programs for white-collar displaced managers. Only one program—the Nonprofit Management and Communications Program1 (Program)—emerged to address this particular stratum, and it did so with the special intention of building a bridge to the nonprofit work world. It therefore provides a unique resource for research concerning the adult resocialization of corporate managers. Other managers have made this transition alone, but by studying the Program I could follow many managers all encountering similar problems and observe the range of responses and adaptations. No other setting that I am aware of would have provided such a research opportunity.
