Abstract

In 1887, the Deutsche Zeitschrift für Chirurgie carried a paper entitled “Complicated Diseases of the Pancreas and Their Surgical Treatment” by Karl Hagenbachm(1) of Basel. In this article, based on his thesis, Hagenbach had reviewed the literature on operations on pancreatic cysts (13 cases) and added two autopsy cases. He also reported two cases operated on by his professor, August Socin (p. 455), Professor of Surgery at Basel, who, on June 1, 1887, had operated on a forty-five-year-old woman with a preoperative diagnosis of intestinal obstruction. At laparotomy, performed 15 days after onset, he found a cystic cavity filled with blood and compressing the duodenum. The surgeon emptied the cyst with a trocar, however, the patient died within 24 hours. Autopsy revealed the “cyst” to be a localized hematoma of the head of the pancreas. This case(2) was one of the earlier “cysts” to have been aspirated intraoperatively.
