Abstract

In Sweden, the established concept of and the term for archaeology directed toward the marine environment is “marinarkeologi”—in English, marine archaeology. Specialized fields are seen as “underwater archaeology,” archaeology directed toward research in the underwater environment, as well as “boat and ship archaeology,” dealing with recording, analyses, and interpretation of boat and ship remains. In this chapter, the term “archaeology in the marine environment” is used as the general term defining the kind of archaeology discussed.
