Abstract

Within the past decade there has been a sharp increase in the frequency of type 2 diabetes in adolescents and children1-12. Although this increase has been associated with a rise in the frequency of obesity in the pediatric population, the etiology of type 2 diabetes in the pediatric subjects remains unclear. To better understand the similarities and the differences between pediatric and adult type 2 diabetes and the potential risks type 2 diabetes poses to our youth and future generations, this chapter will compare and contrast the pathophysiology and treatment of both adult and pediatric type 2 diabetes.
