Summary
The authors discuss the thesis that Ca2+ release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is of crucial importance in the pathophysiology of myocardial ischemic injury. On this basis, experimental studies in which modulators of the SR Ca2+ ATPase or SR Ca2+ release channel have been used in the context of ischemia-reperfusion are reviewed. In addition, the role of SR modulation in the cardioprotective effect of adenosine and of ischemic preconditioning is outlined. On the whole, these findings suggest that modulation of SR function is a therapeutical strategy that deserves further investigation.
