Sleep

Abstract

In addition to the excessive sleepiness associated with insufficient sleep, psychotropic medication or alcohol intake, sleep-related breathing disorders, primary hypersomnia, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia and recurrent hypersomnia, it is important to be able to recognise excessive daytime sleepiness in association with a number of organic and psychological illnesses. Although excessive sleepiness may sometimes be the presenting feature, it is far more likely to be recognised as such during the course of the illness, either when interviewing a member of the family or as a result of observing the patient in hospital.
