Abstract
The seminal recordings of the cerebral potentials preceding voluntary movement by (Kornhuber and Deecke1964, Kornhuber and Deecke 1965) were the first to clearly show that the brain was active long before the initiation of movement. Since the premovement activity, termed the Bereitschaftspotential (BP), was time-locked to the onset of movement, it was thought to reflect synaptic activity associated with the planning, preparation and initiation of movement. Yet, despite considerable investigation over the past three decades, three fundamental questions about the nature of the BP remain unanswered: What are the neural structures contributing to the generation of the BP? What is the time course of their activity? What is the function of this activity?
