Abstract
This classic conversation between a mother and her five-year-old daughter highlights one of many discussions a parent might have with a child about her emotional reactions to the ups and downs of life. A situation such as this can potentially erupt into a screaming tantrum, leaving mother and daughter distraught. While this may mean Issey gets to the party, she might learn little about her fears and anxieties, and she may not seek out her mother for emotional support in the future.
Issey: I don’t want to go to Melanie’s party...
Mother: What do you mean sweetie, you ’ll have a wonderful time.
Issey: No I won’t. I hate Melanie.
Mother: You don’t hate her. Don’t be silly...I know you love going to
Melanie’s house, and it’s always fun to go to parties.
