Chemical and Physical Properties

It is critical to understand the chemical and physical properties of MTBE and other gasoline constituents because they determine how the chemicals behave in the subsurface environment. These properties also determine which physical and chemical technologies are suitable for remediation. These chapter reviews the chemical and physical properties of a number of gasoline constituents. How these properties affect fate and transport will be discussed in more detail in Chapter 3. The subject of biodegradability is covered in Chapters 3, 12, and 13.
