Abstract
Since the mid-1990s, managers and regulators of sites contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons have increasingly turned to a remedial strategy called MNA. This strategy relies on naturally occurring processes — without human intervention or enhancement — to reduce concentrations and exposure risks from ground water contaminants. Although the name MNA is commonly used, at least two other names are associated with the same strategy (NRC, 2000): natural attenuation and intrinsic remediation. This chapter routinely uses the shorter name, natural attenuation, but the three terms can be taken as synonyms.\
